FUNGITEN Testing: What It Measures, When It May Help, and Its Limitations

FUNGITEN testing can provide information about selected fungal material in settled dust, but the value of the result depends on the question being asked and the conditions under which the sample is collected. Vanguard Environmental Services uses FUNGITEN selectively as one component of a building-focused environmental assessment—not as a stand-alone diagnosis or universal measure of whether a property is “safe.”
What Is FUNGITEN Testing?
FUNGITEN is a laboratory analysis offered by LIS Biotech. The laboratory’s published comparison list identifies the fungal targets included in its FUNGITEN panel. The laboratory also provides collection materials and chain-of-custody documentation for submitted samples.
Vanguard may consider this settled-dust analysis when it can help answer a defined property question. We interpret the report alongside inspection observations, moisture conditions, building history, sampling location, recent cleaning or disturbance, and the limitations of the collection method.
What FUNGITEN May Help Identify
A FUNGITEN report can provide laboratory findings for the fungal targets included in the panel. Those findings may help an environmental professional evaluate a specific concern when settled dust is an appropriate sample type.
- It may add information when a property has a known moisture or mold history.
- It may support investigation of a defined area or building-side question.
- It may help determine whether additional inspection, source evaluation, or targeted sampling is warranted.
- It can document selected fungal material present in the submitted sample.
The laboratory report does not independently identify the moisture source, locate concealed growth, establish the condition of every room, or determine what materials require remediation. Those decisions require property context.
FUNGITEN Is Not the Same as ERMI
FUNGITEN and ERMI should not be described as interchangeable scores. ERMI is an index developed by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency researchers for research applications. The EPA states that ERMI has not been validated for routine non-research use in homes, schools, or other buildings.

When Might Settled-Dust Testing Be Considered?
The decision begins with the property—not the name of a test. Examples of questions that may justify considering settled-dust analysis include:
- Does the building history suggest a condition that requires broader investigation?
- Could dust information add useful context to inspection and moisture findings?
- Is there a clearly defined decision that the laboratory result could influence?
- Are the collection location and conditions appropriate for the intended interpretation?
In other situations, direct visual inspection, moisture evaluation, air sampling, tape-lift sampling, or another targeted method may be more useful. Sometimes inspection findings alone provide enough information to recommend the next step without broad laboratory testing.

- Select the method. Sampling is recommended only when the result can add useful information.
- Interpret the result in context. Laboratory findings are considered with the inspection—not separated from it.
- Recommend the next step. The outcome may involve source correction, additional investigation, a defined remediation scope, cleaning, or no further sampling.
